The key points for the plebiscite for peace

Colombia has lived a tradition of war and armed conflict that exceeds 50 years, and since then the purpose of presidential mandates has been negotiated final peace agreements.


Only until last August 25 Colombians witnessed the establishment of a definitive text agreement and the announcement of the date of the plebiscite,2 october 2016. A cross-cutting theme of the agreement is reparations to victims.

Why is plebiscite important to the peace process?

The plebiscite is a mechanism to endorse the peace agreement, which will be legally binding and help with the constitutional development agreement.

So, the pronouncement of Congress regarding the holding of this plebiscite shall not exceed 25 September 2016.

This agreement has been consolidated in the last four years and consists of 297 pages containing the 6 points of the negotiating agenda. This are broadly the main topics of the document:
1. Comprehensive Rural Reform (RRI)
2. Participation in politics
3. End of conflict
4. Illicit drugs
5. Victims
6. Implementation, verification and countersignature or authentication.
